Summer is an exciting time for us at Chabot Space & Science Center. Our hours are expanded to welcome guests throughout the week, Tuesday through Sunday, and clear skies mean telescope viewing on the deck on Friday and Saturday nights is at its best.

Our Space Explorers Summer Camp kick off in full swing starting July 6, running through the end of the month. We may have some openings remaining if you’ve not yet had a chance to make your summer plans, so be sure to check in with our staff. These camps regularly receive the highest reviews, offering some of the coolest hands-on science around.

Summer is also the time that our teen programs are in full gear. Our Galaxy Explorers will be at the Center daily offering fun hands-on science experiences for our guests, including the ever popular Bottle Rocket launches in the Courtyard. Our college Environmental Interns will be working to ensure we continue to further 'green' our Center operations, and the girls in our Techbridge program will be having their annual summer programs. This year we are very pleased that five of our Techbridge girls from Oakland Tech, Oakland Unity, and Arroyo High schools will be attending the 4-week Summer Science and Engineering program at Smith College. This opportunity is made possible by the SD Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.

Behind the scenes, Chabot also plays an important role in training teachers with our various professional development programs. This year we are very pleased to announce the first Climate Change High School Teachers Institute, funded by a grant from NASA. Attendees will learn some of the latest science in Climate Change to take back to their classrooms in the fall.

And speaking of Climate Change, the team at Chabot is very busy this summer finalizing our newest major exhibit, Bill Nye’s Climate Lab. Featuring Bill Nye the Climate Guy, the exhibit will provide the latest in hand-on interactive experiments for kids to learn about the challenges and opportunities surrounding the changing climate, and what they can do to address those challenges. The Exhibit will open in early November, but you can get a jump on it now by visiting our fun interactive website, www.BillsClimateLab.org.

Summer is a great time for a return visit to Chabot…after seeing a cool planetarium show or giant screen movie, take advantage of the miles of hiking through the surrounding redwoods before coming back for lunch or an afternoon snack. It’s a great day out for the entire family.

We look forward to welcoming you to Chabot this summer. And as always, thank you so much for your ongoing support.

All the best.
